The Guide To Properly Layering Your SkinCare Products

By Dr. Salar Parvini

What is proper skin care product layering and why does it matter?

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding skin care products as to what the “correct” order of application is.  It can be really confusing when you go pick up a hot new product and try to include it into your current routine.

The order in which you apply your skincare products is the difference between them working and throwing your money down the sink!  You really want those key ingredients to penetrate your skin and do their job. Improper order can slow and often totally block the health effects of your skincare products.

The key to a good routine is simplicity and efficiency.  Below, we have detailed the most scientifically the scientific efficient sequence to apply your skin care products:

Step 1:  Double Cleanse

The cleansing process is broken down into two steps due to the basic chemical principle of “like dissolves like”.  Oil breaks down oil based compounds and water breaks down water based compounds.

Step 1a:  Oil Cleanse

Oil Cleansers help break down makeup and environmental pollutants better than any other natural compound.  A good oil cleanser is blended with other natural compounds so that when water is applied it rinses easily down the sink.

Step 1b:  Water-Based Cleanser

This is the cleanser you are most likely used to. This type of cleanser can be gel, foam, or made of a watery consistency.  If you can, opt for a cleanser that uses aloe vera as its base, because water can be a bit drying.  This will help you create a blank slate to apply your subsequent products.

Step 2:  Apply water based serum

Serums are typically potent mixtures full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other active compounds used to address certain concerns.

   Step 3: Apply moisturizers

Moisturization is essential for all skin types.  You want to opt for one that is also fortified with vitamins, minerals and actives.  You can even dab a little under your eyes as a makeshift eye cream to help you save time and money.

Step 4: Finish with facial oil

This is actually part and parcel of moisturization as it ensures that all the beneficial compounds you’ve put on your skin stays in. Good finishing oils are thin and watery and won't clog your pores. It even lends to enhancing the application and look of make up application. Our finishing oil has been infused with vitamins and antioxidants for an added boost!

Often I come across people who have products they love and simply cannot part with.  It’s important to note that some products and compounds can interact with each other so it’s always a good idea to speak to a skin care expert or Holistic Esthetician about how to properly incorporate those products into your new, and hopefully simplified, routine.    They’ll also be able to give you protips on how to blend oil and moisturizing cream to make eye creams and heavy creams for seasonal skin care!
