Made from natural konjac root (a vegetable that grows in Asia), konjac is a gentle way to exfoliate skin during your facial cleansing routine. Though the root is natural not all konjac sponges are processed the same. It’s best to opt for one that has been steam sterilized and freeze dried vs one that is soaked in a chemical bath before packaging.
Konjac sponges are hard when they are dry, but have a light, almost gel-like texture when they are wet so they are perfect for applying a mild, mechanical, exfoliation for both face and body.
Just be sure that you never use a dry konjac sponge as it may over exfoliate your skin!
Many people use towels or nylon brush machines but the textures of those products can, again, lead to over exfoliation and irritation of your skin. By using a konjac sponge twice a day you'll cover your bases and help prevent blackheads and clogged pores.
Different color sponges correlate to different active ingredients. For example, grey to black shades are infused with charcoal. Again, there are various sources of charcoal, be sure to opt for organic bamboo charcoal since it is also sustainably grown. This is the quality of the Saffron & Sage charcoal konjac sponge.
So how do I use one?
It's best to use it twice daily – once in the morning and once right when you get home from work. By not waiting until bedtime (assuming you get home at 6 pm and go to bed at 10pm) you'll stave off over 15% of additional oxidative stress per year!
Just splash some water to puff up the sponge, add a few pumps of your favorite facial cleanser and apply. It is also best to use a gentle, small circular motion to help remove dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental pollutants.
When you're finished with it, always rinse it, squeeze it dry and hang it to dry fully until next use. Just remember that it is a natural root that biodegrades so you'll want to change it every month or so and never keep one longer than 6-8 weeks.
